Heriot-Watt University award many music scholarships each year supported by the Alumni Fund, in the form of free music tuition for talented singers and instrumentalists. In addition, the Archer Music Scholarships, in memory of the late John Archer, offer up to two scholarships each year for students taking part in residential courses, and one scholarship for a talented musician to receive free music tuition for the year.

 

The following criteria are taken into consideration:

§         musical ability and potential, proof of exam results and membership of orchestras or choirs;

§         a reference from your last vocal or instrumental teacher;

§         in the case of the Archer Music Scholarships, a personal statement is also required.

 

All music scholars are automatic members of the orchestra or choir, and will be expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts. If eligible, students may apply for an academic scholarship in addition to a music scholarship.

The Centre for Sport and Exercise has been running its Sports Scholarship Programme for over 20 years. The programme offers support in the region of £2,000 to athletes considered to be of national standard in any of our 32 Sports Union sports. Always expanding, our programme now offers Sports Science and Sports Medicine support, academic flexibility, financial support for training and competition expenses, scholar clothing and access to the Centre for Sport and Exercise facilities. Schlumberger is the world's leading oilfield services company supplying technology, information solutions and integrated project management that optimize reservoir performance for customers working in the oil and gas industry. The company employs more than 76,000 people of over 140 nationalities working in approximately 80 countries.

In partnership with Heriot-Watt University, Schlumberger has established a scholarship programme for third and fourth year students. The scholarship awards are for £1500 per year for the remainder of study. Vacation work placements will normally be available to scholarship holders.

 

The scholarships are open to students from the following disciplines:

For students on a one-year full-time course the value of the Scholarship is 20% of the tuition-fee level. For part-time or other modes of study the value is pro-rata to the above level, up to a maximum of 20% of a one-year fee.

 

The Scheme, applicable to many Postgraduate taught courses across the University, is open to all Heriot-Watt Alumni who have previously been registered for one year or more on a Heriot-Watt degree course. Alumni applicants should contact the relevant School or Postgraduate Institute to confirm if the proposed course of study is eligible for Scholarship, or for further information.

 

Exclusions are:

§         EBS courses

§         IPE courses (though they may offer a Scholarship for students studying in Orkney)

§         MSc Actuarial Science

§         Students studying on a course offered jointly with another university (Erasmus Mundus courses and several courses joint with Scottish Universities)

§         Students studying with a learning partner

§         Students studying in Dubai

§         Research degrees (eg PhD, MPhil)

 

The Scheme is available to students entering in 2009/2010 and thereafter. The Scheme is open to students who pay their own fees (we don't give discounts to companies that pay fees).

 

International Scholarships Programme

Heriot-Watt University offers partial scholarships for up to 50 high-calibre overseas students on selected taught Masters courses. Scholarship applications can only be made once an offer to study on the course has been issued and awards are made on a competitive basis. Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (ORSAS)

Applicants must have a good Honours Degree (or equivalent). Award covers the difference between the 'home' and 'overseas' rate of tuition fees. Successful applicants usually receive James Watt scholarships for the remainder of their fees plus a maintenance contribution.

Applications should be made to the School of study by 30 November.

These Scholarships provide a limited tuition fee remission to exceptional applicants in areas of research that are strategically important to the School. The majority of University tuition fees are still payable by the student and no contribution towards maintenance is available. Unsuccessful applicants for a James Watt Scholarships are automatically considered for a Fees Only Scholarship.

 

Applications for scholarships for Postgraduate Research study would be decided on merit after an application for full time PhD study has been made.
